Lord Soth

Those who are coming to Ravenloft via the current Arthaus games may wonder who Soth is. He's the so-called "Black Rose", the previous darklord of Sithicus, though there are a couple of adventures featuring him. He is not referred to by his name due to rights issues with WotC, who hold the rights to the other Dungeons and Dragons settings that many darklords come from; this is why, for instance, Hazlik is no longer explicitly referred to as a Red Wizard of Thay. Further, the creators of Soth and the Dragonlance setting he came from, Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, at some point objected to Soth's presence in Ravenloft and retroactively declared he had never been in the setting to begin with (apparently it was all a dream, like that one season of Dallas). That said, this is a nice deathknight/blackguard mini, and those who like it might also locate the out-of-production Ral Partha boxed set Lord Soth's Charge.

His paint job was exceedingly simple, since he's clad almost head to toe in black, with only the purple plume and cloak breaking up the monotony. While his armor is described as a burnt, sooty black, I actually lightly brushed on small amounts of dark silver both to show that his armor is in fact metal, and to make it look as if I had done more than just spray on black primer (with so much of him being black to begin with, using black primer was the best decision).

Also, though you'll be lucky if you can see it in the photo, I actually went to the trouble to paint Soth's eyes. Trying to get the color inside the slit of the helmet visor without slopping it on the visor's edges was quite difficult! I actually went to the trouble of buying a bottle of orange glow-in-the-dark paint to use; frankly, there's so little there I'm not sure it has enough pigment to fluoresce (and I don't know what I'm going to do with the 99.9% of the paint remaining in the bottle)-- but it's the principle of the thing, doncha know....
