Charles Le Brun was a French painter and engraver of the late 17th century. Much of his work involved large tapestries and murals for French royalty, as described in his WebMuseum entry.

And then there are these.

LeBrun was also interested in the study of physiognomy, a pseudoscience that believed a person's personality could be determined by the features of his face. Originally composed for a now-lost dissertation on the subject, these animal/human engravings are intriguing to look at.

I've scanned these images from the now out-of-print book Resemblances: Amazing Faces by Charles Le Brun. Good luck finding a copy.
